WADA NA TODO ABHIYAN (WNTA)

WNTA

WNTA is a campaign to check the government’s accountability for its promises of ending poverty, social exclusion and discrimination. This Abhiyan has emerged from the consensus of a group of social and human rights activists who were a part of the World Social Forum 2004, Mumbai. Its aim is to lift the condition of the poor and provide them with opportunities that allow them to learn, live and work in dignity. For this, the WNTA has four Thematic Action Groups (TAGs) on Health, Education, Livelihoods and Social Exclusion. WNTA monitors whether the government schemes meet the objectives set in the UN Millennium Declaration (2000), the National Development Goals and the National Common Minimum Program (2004-09) with special focus on the Right to Livelihood, Health & Education. WNTA ensures that the concerns and aspirations of Dalits, Adivasis, Nomadic tribes, women, children, youth and differently abled are the main focus point across all the programs and policies of the government.

WNTA is represented by a wide network of more than 3000 rights action groups all over India. Several states have decentralized networks focusing on the key areas of intervention of the Abhiyan and develop local advocacy agenda and priorities around the campaign themes. The state networks have increased the visibility, outreach and impact of the Abhiyan at the state as well as national levels. This network links social groups and the policy makers on issues of strategic relevance.

A Campaign Co-ordination Group (CCG) governs the Abhiyan. The CCG involves a total of 150 grassroots organizations, people’s movements, advocacy and resource organizations for developing various policies and for giving direction to the Abhiyan.

Alternative Futures is a part of the CCG.
